Birdsmith Ecological Research (Birdsmith) is dedicated to bringing the best available science and planning to ocean conservation, marine spatial planning and ocean management. Using a science-based and rights-based approach, Birdsmith works with stakeholders, communities and partners to provide more than 25 years of experience for issues of ecological, economic, and socio-cultural importance.
Birdsmith was formed as a consulting company in 1995 to study seabirds and advance marine bird conservation and management in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. Clients included the Canadian government on projects to advance endangered species conservation and management and Laskeek Bay Conservation Society on Haida Gwaii. Projects expanded to include old-growth forest ecosystems in coastal British Columbia and then to national and international policy.
Birdsmith supports marine spatial planning (MSP), marine protected areas (MPA), ecosystem-based management (EBM), legislation, fisheries management, outreach and education, and policy to increase stewardship and sustainable development of marine ecosystems.
